Stony Creek Metro Park, Shelby Township, MI

Today Carolyn and I did something we had been meaning to do all winter, go cross country skiing. The temperatures were mingling in the mid teens, which could be confused for heat wave conditions here in Michigan, so we took the opportunity to head outdoors and hit the snow.

Stony Creek Metro Park has a nice series of groomed cross country ski trails through beautiful forest. They also have a rental shack to rent skis, boots, and polls, which we took advantage of, because neither of us have any equipment of our own.

It was awkward at first glide, never having cross country skied before, but we quickly caught on, and both found that it was incredibly fun and relaxing, and soon found ourselves zooming and sliding forward through the snow with ease. Having down hill skied my entire life, I'm surprised I hadn't tried this sooner. In fact, I think I liked it more. Not having to wait for chair lifts, dealing with crowds, and the fact that you get a better work out and really get to experience the woods more intimately were all positives.

It felt really good to get out of the house and be outdoors for the morning.  The landscape was snowy and magical, with pine trees covered in crystal white, and several animal tracks dotting this way and that over the crystalline surface.

I hope we are able to get out and do more cross country skiing this season. Seeing how this winter blast isn't letting up anytime soon, I feel this is a safe bet. Simply stated, cross country skiing is a ton of fun!
